Job stress scale

 

Introduction;

According to the(Bandaranayake, 2014 and nie,2017),

People who frequently experience feelings of stress at work may be at risk of ,

  • mental health problems
  • depression
  • fatigue
  • muscular tension
  • headaches
  • heart palpitations
  • sleeping difficulties, such as insomnia
  • gastrointestinal upsets, such as diarrhea or constipation
  • dermatological disorders

 So, it is important for employers to recognize work-related stress in the work place.

So, to identify the job stress, business can use Job stress scale.

What is job stress scale?

 This scale was developed by Parker and Dacoities (1983). Job stress scale  measure uses 13 items to measure job stress under two headings.

  1. Time stress (feelings of being under constant pressure)

Time stress items are,

  • Working here makes it hard to spend enough time with my family.
  •  I spend so much time at work, I can’t see the forest for the trees.
  • Working here leaves little time for other activities.
  •  I frequently get the feeling I am married to the company.
  •  I have too much work and too little time to do it in
  •  I sometimes dread the telephone ringing at home because the call might be job-related
  • I feel like I never have a day off.
  • Too many people at my level in the company get burned out by job demands

    2. 
    A
    nxiety (job-related feelings of anxiety).

  •  I have felt fidgety or nervous as a result of my job
  •  My job gets to me more than it should
  •  There are lots of times when my job drives me right up the wall
  • Sometimes when I think about my job, I get a tight feeling in my chest
  •  I feel guilty when I take time off from job
    (permission, n.d.)

Responses are obtained using,

·          5-point

·         1 = strong disagreement 

·          5 = strong agreement

Conclusion

Reduce workplace stress provide to the aid individual employees and the entire organization to,

  • Increase job satisfaction, performance and trust
  • Decrease employee absenteeism
  •  Decrease employee turn over
  • Increase productivity
  • Increase motivation

Job stress scale can be used to measure how stress is and how it impacts to the working environment .

When using a job stress scale ,

1.Job stress scales provide standardized measures, ensuring that stress assessment is consistent across different individuals and organizations.

2 Able to analyses  quantification of stress levels, using numerical data

3.With standardized measures, it becomes easier to compare stress levels across different groups, different departments within an organization or across industries.

4.Able to identify the sources of stress in the workplace, which can inform targeted interventions.

5.Able to facilitates research on stress in the workplace

Not using a job stress scale can lead following drawbacks:

1.Without a standardized measure, assessments of stress may be subjective and different individuals or managers may have different interpretations of their stress.

2.Some times its difficult to compare stress levels across different groups or over time.

3.Inability to Identify Sources

4.There is a challenge to identify the underlying causes of stress in the workplace 

5. The absence of standardized measures can hinder research efforts to understand and address workplace stress effectively.

6.There is a  challenge  to develop  interventions to minimize or control the stress in the workplace.

So ,Organization should get the use of job stress scale considering above facts.
